Guide to Become an American Red Cross Volunteer

During large disasters, you can use your professional skills to deliver hands-on care and education to disaster-affected clients. The work setting is generally in emergency shelters or on outreach teams in the community. (Keep in mind, you could be assigned to another work location once you arrive on scene depending on the needs of the operation.)

If volunteering as a Disaster Health or Disaster Mental Health professional interests you, great! As a first step, please review the criteria to find out if you're eligible:

How to Sign Up

  1. Go to Volunteer tab and click Become a Volunteer
  2. Select Find a Volunteer Opportunity
  3. Enter zip code and click Search
  4. Click Disaster Mental Health button
  5. Click Apply Now button

After completing the steps above, your application will be expedited for the affected area and your license will be verified. An American Red Cross virtual orientation will be scheduled (mostly self-study) followed by the Virtual Disaster Mental Health Fundamentals. Once these trainings are complete, you will receive: deployment instructions, directions for travel, job assignment and lodging at no personal expense.

For the Hurricane Helene response, volunteers are being asked for a 10+ day deployment.
